Why Your Deodorant Isn’t Working

Why Your Deodorant Isn’t Working

Having a hard time keeping your stink under control? It happens to the best of us. There are so many reasons why you might feel like your deodorant isn’t working the way you want it to. Whether you’re trying out natural deodorant for the first time or just haven’t quite found the right one yet, we’ve got some tips to make sure you’re staying fresh all day.

Here’s what to do when your deodorant is not working

Cut your antiperspirant off… for good this time.

If you’ve just begun your transition into using aluminum-free deodorant, it’s important to toss out your old antiperspirants. After all that time plugging your sweat ducts with aluminum, it can take some time for your body to adjust to sweating and to ‘detox.’ To push through this detox period, try putting a charcoal or clay mask on your underarms to purify your skin. If you have oilier skin, you may need a little more help to get you through the detox period, because increased sebum production can cause more bacteria overgrowth and, as a result, more odor. If that’s the case, try a mild acid-based toner on your underarms as you make the switch to aluminum-free deodorant. This may sound like a lot of work, but don’t worry! There’s actually a lot of light at the end of this tunnel. Not only will you be rid of any aluminum in your deodorant routine, after you adjust your new deodorant will begin to work harder and you may actually find that your body is sweating less.

Prep your skin.

Ever wonder why your armpits will begin to smell bad after sweating? Bacteria that grows on your skin is what causes this stink. So, naturally, if you’re applying to skin that isn’t free of these bacteria, it will be harder to mask this smell. To get the most out of your deodorant, you should apply it to clean, dry skin. Towel dry your underarms after you shower (and before applying your deo) or, if you’re on the go, use a facial cleansing wipe or tissue to wipe down the skin before applying.

Your fragrance isn’t performing in the way you expected.

Sometimes going for a scent because you liked it on your friend can be disappointing. This is because with any fragrance you apply directly to your skin, it will blend with your own body chemistry to create a scent that is uniquely yours. This may come out very differently than you expect it to and can be tricky to overcome. It may take testing out a couple different scent options to figure out what you think works best for you. And, if you’re having a difficult time finding your perfect scent… unscented is always an option and will work just as hard to keep you smelling fresh!

You’re having an allergic reaction.

Speaking of how your body’s reaction to a product may change how it smells. Your body may be having a reaction to a particular ingredient in your deo. Although it may be a minor reaction, this might still have an effect on the smell your body is producing if it is trying to purge an ingredient it is allergic to. If you have sensitive skin or think you may be having a reaction to your deo, try looking for a product that has soothing ingredients like aloe vera and are formulated for sensitive skin.

You may not be using the right product.

If none of these tips are working and you’re feeling discouraged. It may be time to try out a new deodorant, one that has you covered on all of the above (we’ve got a reco for you ;-) ). Our deodorant has many scents to choose from and will keep you fresh all day long.
